Philippine glossy starling

Scientific Name : Aplonis paneyensis

The parents of this bird nested in a ventilation hole on the first floor of my shop for many years.

This bird was rejected by its parents and was rescued by my neighbour. This bird is now about 5 years old. It has a fractured leg and a pair of deformed wings. It can still fly but only for a few feet.

This bird is now very tame and delighted the children and visitors every time it was let out of its cage.

Pigeon

Notes : abundant , esp in the older part of the town. Some shop keepers make it a point to feed the birds early in the morning with grains. They belive that feeding wild birds is an act of charity which will bring a good business ambience to the shop.

Milky Stork

Scientific name : Mycteria cinerea
Notes: These birds were photographed free flying inside the Singapore Zoo. These is probably the same flock that were seen flying and feeding in the southern part of the Johor Bahru City in recent months.

Black Naped Oriole

Scientific Name : Oriolus chinensis
Notes: quite an elusive bird. Although I hear its typical fluty whistle every time I visit this same part of the park, I have not been able to get a sharp picture of this bird. The pictues I publish here are the best I have at the moment.

Notes: Perches on wires , flies in groups in the evening near buildings catching insects. No seen: close to 300 at Johor Jaya

Sighted : Johor Straits , opposite the Tun Aminah Hospital . 30th September 2008 at about 12 noonNumber seen : oneNotes: Whitish cheeks and throat. Sits for long hours on a disused pile right in the middle of the water.

Notes: Commonly sold in pet shops in Johor Bahru. Feeds on fruits. Black billed. Often sleeps hanging upside down.

Notes : seen in Pelentong , near Giant Hypermarket.

Murai

Common Name : Magpie Robin

Scientific Name : Copsychus saularis

Notes: Sold as song birds in Johor Bahru. Frequently singing competitions organised in Taman Tun Aminah and many other places. Nest in a hole in tree trunks. Often lays three eggs. When three chicks hatched, often only two will survive.

Long Tailed Parakeet

Common name : Long Tailed Parakeet

Scientific Name: Psittacula longicauda

Notes: commonly trapped and sold in pet shops in Johor Bahru. Do not do well in captivity. I photographed a nesting pair in Bukit Chagar back in 1992. The wooded area has since been cleared to build a new imigration complex.
